Bike Frogs

Transparent

In this project, I wanted to explore different methods for connecting multiple players in my project as easily as possible. Having already tested the "Coherence" plugin, I was disappointed with its workflow, which led me to turn toward other existing systems.

My goal is to become familiar with an online game development practice that suits me, is free, and is fully functional. This involves revisiting the fundamentals:

  • Variable synchronization

  • RPC commands

  • Online animation and physics

I chose a racing game—specifically a bicycle game—as my theme. This allowed me to better understand ownership and how it behaves depending on the chosen server architecture.

PurrNet is a completely free and open-source solution that simplifies a lot of things compared to FishNet, featuring super simple RPC commands, no baking, and powerful components to synchronize elements like animations, variables, and scripts that should only run on the client.

I realized it was the ideal solution when I joined their Discord server. I had the chance to chat directly with the developer about a missing feature in the package (an easy way to retrieve all players in a scene)—a feature he integrated that very same day.

Their website offers free projects to explore as well as various guides on accessible, open-source Unity projects.
